Here's one more way to play "Yankee Doodle" for Grandma. The recorder--a most underrated instrument--is also one of the easiest to master. The natural precursor to more sophisticated wind instruments, it could be the starting point of an orchestral career. Not looking that far ahead? Kids will still feel a great sense of accomplishment learning an entire repertoire of songs by using the included instruction book. The book goes through 10 lessons, starting with the bare bones--learning notes, where to place fingers. It ends with full-length songs, employing flat and sharp chords. A certificate is included to present following the first performance or formal recital. Young drummers need something sturdy to sit on, but traditional (adult) drum seats are simply too big. This folding adjustable drum stool is designed especially for kids 4 to 12 years old. Simply attach the screw to any one of five positions, which range in height from 14 to 19.5 inches from the ground. The foldout tripod base has rubber feet and a wide stance, so that it's stable when opened completely. At 9.5 inches in diameter, the black vinyl seat is nicely cushioned and reinforced with wood. If space is a concern, the whole thing can be disassembled into three 9.5-to-10-inch-long pieces in a matter of seconds. The stool also works nicely for keyboard and guitar players.
