Eyewitness Kit: Mold-It
Made by Skullduggery
Age Group: 8 - 12 years
    Amazon base price: $9.99
Why do paleontologists and archaeologists make molds of fossils and artifacts? You'll find out with this unusual Eyewitness Kit that explains the basics of molding and casting. The instruction and information booklet describes different kinds of molds, processes, and materials scientists use to create casts. The kit includes molding material to make a reusable seamless mold of a favorite item and enough casting medium for several creations. Adult supervision is recommended, as this is a somewhat complex and messy operation. Your child could create some unique gifts using this kit--what grandparent wouldn't love a cast of a grandchild's hand? --Marcie Bovetz

    Good product, good customer support.
I bought this product for my 6-year-old daughter. When I first opened the box, I was a little disappointed. I thought it was a little over priced for 2 small bags of powder and some instructions.

On top of that, the "mixture" didn't harden (even after 5 days it still wouldn't harden). So we threw it away and called the company's customer support number on the instructions. They were friendly and helpful. They shipped a new bag via 2 day air to Hawaii for free.

We tried it again, only this time used about 1/3rd the amount of water listed on the instructions and it worked perfectly. My daughter loved it. She created the mold and painted it.

Overall, it's a good product. It allows children to follow instructions and create something rather than simply "play."

    Great and fun!
Mold of hand turned out really well, could even see the fingerprints and fingernails.

Crayola Model Magic Bucket: Assorted Colors (2 lb.)
    Made by Binney & Smith
    Age Group: 4 - 10 years
      Amazon base price: $16.99
This featherweight, pliable modeling material can be used to make almost anything--doll furniture, Christmas ornaments, jewelry. You can roll it, squeeze it, or mold it. Each of the four sealed pouches contains 8 ounces of nontoxic modeling material, each in a different color--red, yellow, blue, and white (colors may stain). Braid colors together, or combine them to form new colors. Try a marbled look. A chart on the back of the lidded plastic container shows how to mix colors. You can press objects into the soft material, either to leave decorative or textural imprints or to become a part of your creation. Objects usually air dry within 24 hours--and so does the leftover material, so be sure to put it in an airtight container for safekeeping. Once you've opened a package it's best to use it all on the same day. When your creations have "set," they can be painted and decorated. --Louise Carter

      Better than playdough
This stuff feels light as air, and is easy to model and mold into just about anything. With the first package we bought, the Model Magic was hard as a rock (so it was obviously ancient). I emailed Crayola, who apologized profusely and offered me a coupon for a new package (their customer support system is prompt and professional- 5 stars for that!). It should be noted, then, that if you want your creation to be permanent, leave it out to air dry (about 24 hours). If you want to be able to keep playing with it, put it in an airtight container. I tried putting water on the rock hard stuff (as the website suggested trying), but it didn't do anything. More fun than playdough (and doesn't smell funny, either).

      No Mess!
I love this product! It's on the expensive side for what you are getting, but it's great for kids. I have a 2 and 4 year old and they love to mix the colors and see what happens. They make balls with swirls, roll it out and use cookie cutters or just shape whatever they want. It is as educational as water colors for learning the mixes of colors without the mess. It doesn't get all over the place like play-doh. There is nothing to break because when it dries, it is almost like rubber. If pulled too hard, it will break. The downside....once the package is opened, you must use it all because it doesn't store very well. There is even a disclaimer on the package. There are individual 2 oz. packages sold for people who just want to try it. Once you're sold, you will want the larger tubs because it works out cheaper.

        Overall a good toy.
Creating with clay can be very messy, creating with play dough sometimes the creation falls apart to quickly and using other brands of modeling material isn't a great value is the child is disappointed with the final outcome.

Using the Character Creator will give the child a real sense of accomplishment when the project takes on the final shape. While this product is made for the 4 year range and above some of the younger children may and will need parents help.

The last time I looked at this product there was very little to add to the model, since that time Crayola has added more plastic parts and these parts a re very sturdy although some of that parts may pose a choking hazard to real small children.

The only two things I found to be small problems was the set I tested only had 3 colors of the model magic, red, yellow and blue and the size of the model magic should be a little larger. The other thing is that the model magic dries within 24 hours not allowing for the re-using of anything and small kids might find this a little hard to deal with.

Overall, this is a very good product and Crayola should include a re-order form with the set to allow parents to replenish the used stock.

          Fun! Fun! Fun!
I purchased this for my 9 year old grandson's birthday, and he loved it more than most of his other gifts. He comes over to my home some weekends, and brings it along in the bucket that the clay comes in. The only problem is that his sister wants to play too, so I am online to purchase another one. I recommend this for any child.

          Keeps them busy!
I love this product! I purchased it for my 5 and 8 year olds, and it is a great way to keep them out of my hair while I get housework done. Highly recommended! The best part is that when they are done, everything can be thrown right into the bucket - easy clean up.

          Too Difficult
The clay in this set is so incredibly hard to work with. My kids were very frustrated. The clay does not soften. The cookie cutters and molds with the set are great and we use them with Play Doh or Crayola modeling clay. I do not recommend spending your money on this at all.

Pottery wheels have been used for thousands of years to create clay pots. Today's kids can enjoy making their own clay pots with the help of this well-designed kit. It includes a molded plastic pottery wheel with a foot pedal, an AC adapter, white and terra cotta clay, six tiny pots of paint, a sponge, two paintbrushes, two clay knives, and a clay-cutting cord. Additional common household items such as paper towels, newspaper, and a plate are also needed to complete the pots. A 12-page instruction booklet is included with safety tips, a brief history of pottery, and step-by-step, illustrated instructions for molding and painting pots. The pottery wheel can be operated with the AC adapter or with four D batteries (not included), and parental supervision is recommended. --Marcie Bovetz, mother and former children's librarian

            Best there is
This pottery wheel is the best I've used as a non-professional. Others that are on the market in toy/hobby stores just don't stand up or work as well. I highly recommend it!

Not enough power, not worth the money.
Please, do not waste your time on this product. It is the biggest waste of money. I bought it after using professional potter's wheel in the studio I worked at, and did not expect for this toy to compare to the wheel's at the studio, so I was suprised at the speed the wheel went at with nothing on it, and with 2lbs on it. But the very minute I put the slightest pressure on the wheel to attempt to center the clay, the wheel came to complete stop. I tried for another hour with less and less clay, and the result was always the same. This is a complete gimmick and not worth a moment of your time.

            The Pottery wheel
I tried using the pottery wheel the other day and it made a big mess it went all over the celling and carpet and we can't get it off.So i think that it is not suitable for other children my age (age5).

            Deluxe Pottery Wheel
Made by Natural Science Ind Ltd
            Age Group: 8 - 12 years
              Amazon base price: $19.99
              List price: $24.99 (that's 20% off!)
Children can work with this wheel to make pottery, just like a real potter. Wobbly early attempts at vases and pots are endearing, but the fixed-wheel tool on top of this wheel makes it possible for children to churn out perfectly symmetrical creations. The battery-powered wheel is controlled with a floor pedal, allowing children an ideal introduction to the foot-eye-hand coordination of wheel-turned pottery. The air-dry clay (included) requires no kiln firing or even oven baking--just a shelf for drying. The set also comes with plastic jewel-like mosaic pieces, a paint and glaze kit, a paintbrush, sculpting tools, a sponge, cutting string, and an instruction booklet. --Gail Hudson

A waste of money, a waste of clay, a waste of time.
I had been working on a professional potter's wheel for about five or six months when I bought this product so I would be able to work at home on my throwing skills. I wasn't expecting this wheel to match up to anything in the studio I worked with, but I thought it would at least work. Well, the motor is useless, whenever I touched the clay the wheel came to a quick stop. I tried over and over again, but nothing, and I mean nothing, happened. Even with a half-pound of clay the moment my finger touched it the machine just stopped turning. Whatever you do, do not buy this product. It's a complete waste of money.

              Worst toy, don't even bother.
My parents gave me an earlier version of this toy many years ago and it was a joke. It didn't work and I never was able to make anything. Since it was such a long time ago, I thought perhaps they'd improved the design over the years, so purchased it. Nope, it works just as terribly as before. The two basic problems are that the motor doesn't have near enough torque and it's poorly put together. I returned it and bought my daughter a more expensive model.

Wonderful Toy for the Artistic Child
I bought the Pottery Wheel for the 5 and 7 year old boys of my artist friend. Frequently their mother lets them mold her ceramic clay as an afternoon's diversion. The Pottery Wheel seemed to be a logical extension of that activity. The boys loved the gift and couldn't wait to begin. Their first outing was a fantastic family affair. One controled the speed of the wheel while the other worked the clay! Not ideal for the creation of a masterpeice! Geat fun though. Artist mom was pleased with the product and her sons reaction. It is a toy however, not a professional pottery wheel which costs several hundred dollars. The clay must be very soft to work effectively and one cannot create large vases. You can create small cups and bowels. Mom reports the boys are looking forward to their next creative effort.
