Three different featured bridges--plus others you design--can be constructed from this collection of decks, girders, ramps, and footings. The decks are compatible with Lego and Mega-Bloks. The whole package fits right into the larger Rokenbok construction universe, which incorporates a vast array of snap-together construction modules, as well as radio-controlled vehicles and other snazzy motorized widgets. With a central control module, it's possible to remotely command up to eight different machines using either one or multiple handsets. Cleverly designed radio controls steer and move a very responsive vehicle using only one thumb for control and are quickly interchangeable between vehicles. Detailed building plans are included, though they are not as easy to follow as you might hope. The constructed sets are probably too fragile for use around younger siblings but are endlessly expandable. --Richard Farr

When the trains of Sodor Island are weary from a hard day on the tracks, they head for the comfort of their sheds for a good night's sleep. The Special Engine Shed, part of the Thomas Wooden Railway System, attaches to a piece of track so that a sleepy engine can glide right in.

This neon green and grape roller coaster is impressive in both size and scope. When fully built the coaster stretches 6 feet long and stands 3 feet high. The directions are detailed and clear, and we had no trouble putting it together. It did take us a bit over five hours, though, and it's likely that any child under 12 will need parental assistance. But assembling it is half the fun. When finished, the track careens so hazardously, it's hard to believe the cars will stay on, but they do! The plastic chain hauls the three cars up slowly, just like a real roller coaster, and the sound effects box re-creates the noise so perfectly you'll squirm with anticipation. After reaching the top and passing through the serpent's mouth, the cars begin their dizzying descent past the sound effects box, which has now switched to emitting enthusiastic and terrified screaming. Gravity and centrifugal force whip the little cars along the rest of the track until at last it reaches the beginning of the ride, only to be towed up for another round. If you don't have 6 feet of space, there are instructions for a smaller version, and you can turn the sound effects off if you prefer to play quietly. Entirely worth the time and effort, this is ideal as a family endeavor. --M. Sullivan
