    Quality of cards
We love the game and have purchased it for others. All our friends and family are hooked on it. The only thing we don't like about it ( all of us ) is the quality of the cards. From the very beginning, they were hard to deal out. Very thick and wanted to stick together. Have tried numerous things to make them easier to use, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

A little Luck, A little Skill, and Lots of Fun
We just bought Five Crowns, (mostly because of good reviews on this site) and we were not disappointed. My husband and I have fun playing with our kids (9 and 13) and the kids like to play with friends. I've played it with my daughter and her 2 friends and they love it when they "go out" before me. Everyone has a chance to succeed as each hand starts all over (with a higher number of cards). I like to give our children "thinking" games and while this game depends a lot on the cards you draw, what you do with them involvs some thought. The goal is to draw and discard cards to build runs and sets. As the number of cards in your hand changes the wild card changes too, and you have to pay attention not to discard it by mistake! It takes the 4 of us about 45 minutes to play, just the right amount of time for a game after dinner (we don't watch TV). We've played it almost everyday since we received it.

My favorite card game--and we play almost everything!
Five Crowns is excellent fun. The cards are beautiful and the changing wild cards from hand-to-hand keep the game interesting and exciting. There are lots of stimulating colors if you play with kids and the game helps them learn to match and make numerical sequences. We have played nearly every day since we bought the cards over two months ago. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to play cards or games.

    Cranium Cadoo for Kids
    Made by Cranium
      Amazon base price: $16.99
      List price: $19.99 (that's 15% off!)
Cadoo is the funky fusion of tic-tac-toe, general knowledge, sculpting skill, and scavenger hunt designed for kids by the brainiacs who brought us the left side/right side frenzy of Cranium. Operating solo or in combo with others, players attempt to line up four of their jack-like tokens on the groovily colored grid board by fulfilling a myriad of tasks in an array of categories familiar to Craniacs. Whether attempting to sculpt a taco out of the included clay or guessing which of Milky Way, Butterfinger, or Twix is longer, cadets find that correct answers and successful missions--can you bring back both something smaller than your big toe, and something bigger than your foot, in less than a minute?--put them one-quarter of the way closer to their Cadoo. With its elements of strategy, its elegantly funny graphics, and some downright serious silliness, there isn't a lot of Cadon't in Cadoo. --Tony Mason

Turn off the tube! Take 30 minutes with your kids....
CC is not the most clever game ever invented, nor is it highly challenging or mentally taxing. I believe my 7 year old son would prefer tackling his dad in chess, but for a quick before-bed family half-hour that followed dessert, this fit the bill. The Brandy-Christina-Brittney question did come up! And Mom and Dad failed miserably -- much to the amusement of the kids. So, we had some fun, a few laughs. Hard to put a price on that.

What DOES impress me is the box. Dad, who still hasn't mastered round pegs/square holes, was tasked with pickup. Everything packs neatly away! And best of all, a fold over flap magnetically seals the handled box. (OK, perhaps it doesn't take much to impress me.)

Bottom line: A good game for the 6-10 year old set when you only have half an hour.

      Cadoo + Cranium = fun!
I love this game!! I am 7 years old and just got Cadoo for Christmas. One problem is that it is too easy for my parents. To make it more fair, my parents use the dice and cards from the Cranium game while I use the ones from the Cadoo game. My parents use everything else from the Cadoo game. We have tons of fun this way!

      the perfect gift for kids
After exploring a variety of educational and fun games for my 11 year old sister's birthday, my mother decided on Cranium Cadoo. Not only did both my sistr and I love it, but my parents did, too. We enjoyed running about the house in order to satisfy the requests of the card and sculpting objects from clay. The game combines traditional "Charades" and "Pictionary" like activities with clay and trivia. One question asked, "Who is the youngest: A)Brandy, B)Christina Aguilara, or C)Britney Spears" (Don't be discouraged by this question. Most are not about teenaged singers). Although Cadoo is wonderful for kids and great for the whole family, teenagers and adults find the questions a little too easy. Highly suggested, more fun than the typical boring board game.

      Pass the Pigs Standard Edition
      Made by Winning Moves
        Amazon base price: $9.99
How's your tolerance for puns? You'll need some for Pass the Pigs, a simple game of chance built around a pig theme. Instead of dice, you roll two cute pink piglets, and you gain or lose points depending on how the critters land. For example, if both land on all fours, called a "double trotter," you get 20 points; if they land lying opposite each other, called a "Pig Out," you gain no points and cede your turn. There are a number of other rules as well as a variation called "Hog Call." This would be a good travel game (the pigs, instructions, and scoring pad fit in a small, tidy box) or a fine present for someone who's, well, into pigs! --Elisa Murray

Better to start with experienced players
When I got this game and played with my family, I did not think it was much fun because it takes a while to learn the piggy positions. I played again with a fun group who knows the positions well and I really got into it. The more players, the better.

        The Ultimate Travel Game
Pass the Pigs is really the ultimate travel game. It's entirely contained within a handy dandy carrying case for easy transport. The plastic case is about the size of a checkbook and contains all you will need for hours of fun and hilarity. Nestled inside the case are two pink pigs, a small tablet (with golf pencils), and (of course) the rules. The pigs have a black dot on one side of their tiny little bodies and this dot will affect your scoring.

Basically, you throw the pigs (much like rolling dice) and the way the pigs land (dot side up, touching each other, on top of each other (my oh my!), etc) corresponds to a score (each with cute little piggy names like pig-out, leaning jowler, trotter, making bacon (very bad!), etc.. Where strategy comes in is the roller of the pigs has to decide whether to keep the score and pass or to keep rolling in an effort to add to the score. The object of the game is to reach the winning score first (usually something like 100). The roller of the pigs can keep rolling until pigging out (which is fairly easy to accomplish) or pass. If you pig out, your score is reset to zero. It's fun stuff!

        wonderful for all ages
Pass the Pigs is a variation on Yahtzee, with the fun little pig dice being thrown into different combinations with various point values.

It's a great game to take on trips, or to pull out when entertaining children of various ages; everyone can enjoy it. I've played with children as young as 4 and had a fine time.

Although the rules of the game rely on the player taking a turn until he or she determines that luck is about to run out (at the risk of losing all accumulated points), this can easily be modified (esp. for younger children) so that each player throws the dice in turn and records points.

The educational value is in using mathematical skills, and pattern recognition skills, for younger players.

This game is very durable, but it would be a sad day indeed if the little pigs were ever lost. Luckily, all the parts (pigs, score pad, pencil) fit into a neat little case.

First published in 1962, Mille Bornes (pronounced "meel born," French for "milestones") is an auto racing card game whose object, for each team of two players, is to be the first to complete a series of 1,000-mile trips. Each player has a hand of six cards and picks more in turn from a central pile. There are Distance, Hazard, Remedy, and Safety cards, each with various subgroupings, which determine the course of play. This Collector's Edition reproduces the artwork of the original game. More fun than Nascar. . .
I've been playing Mille Bornes since the 60's and now have a delightful granddaughter with which to share it! Mille Bornes is at once fun, educational, analytical, strategic. Fun for the grownups as well as the kids. Though the box says ages 8 and up - I've introduced the game to some bright 6 year olds and they love it!

So get out your competitive spirit. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

Great Game, but don't buy this edition
This is still an excellent game; lots of fun for all ages. However, the "Collector's Edition" is not worth the price--flimsy plastic tray--skimpy, badly printed score sheets. If this is all that's available, I'd say go for it, but I'd recommend looking for another version.

          Learning plus !
Especially helpful in early children's French language skills plus applied math; eg. addition/subtraction. Adult fun too - you can play this game & socialize without a "must win" complex.

This action-packed, laugh-filled game takes the popular Worms 2 to the next level. You lead a pack of heavily armed worms into action. Sheep explode, mad cows fall from the sky, old ladies detonate spontaneously--you get the general idea.
            Average review score:

            Cute worm+killer weapons+knowledge of weapon use=Chaos
This game is about worms picking up weapons and blowing each other up into birdfood. Features:Cartoonish Worms Cool weapons Nice battlegrounds Greatly done weather effects on weapons High pitched voices of worms You can play the training missions, the campaign, the deathmatches and the deathmatch editor. The best weapons of the game are the exploding sheep, banna bombs(put several worms in a hole, chuck a bannana bomb in there and watch them fly), and the kamikazie tackle, where a worm yells "kamikazie!",flys in the direction you are aming at and self destructs.

Only 4 words:This game is AWESOME!!(and really fun)

            Sleeper of the year!
I love this game! It's easy to learn but hard to master ! Customizing your own team of players makes it feel personal. The multiplayer play is great! Funny! Original! Simple (and yet really complex!) Play a quick game or go for a series of wins. Don't let the cute worms fool you! This is a great game!

            True Classic
It isn't every day that one stumbles across an umbeatable idea for a game. But that is exactly what the folks at Team 17 did with Worms. The creators of this game took the ancient artillery style of video game (a style older than pack-man!) and added an attitude that just couldn't fit on any other game. Its great fun to watch the worms kill each other with all the weapons of the game. Plus, it is easily one of the most custumizable games I have ever seen. You edit almost every feature of the game, from weapon detailes to player hitpoints and more. Given the artillery style of gameplay, however, which is what makes all the action possible, I believe that Worms is one of those games that can only be ruined by a 3D engine.

This game is a gem, and unbeatable within its realm.

            Metal Gear Solid
            Made by Konami
Age Group: 5 years and up
              Amazon base price: $3.68
              List price: $29.99 (that's 88% off!)
              Used price: $17.89
Attention, Metal Gear fans: larger-than-life action hero Solid Snake has been shrunk and now dwells inside your Game Boy Color. If you've always wanted to live the life of a secret agent while on the go with your GBC, Metal Gear Solid is the game to own.

Anyone familiar with the PlayStation title of the same name (or the older Metal Gear game for the original Nintendo Entertainment System) will be familiar with the gameplay. You are Solid Snake and must rely more on stealth than brute force to sneak through a variety of enemy-infested levels. The bad guys (and security cameras) have a limited cone of vision, and savvy players will stay out of the detection zone so they can save their strength for the real challenges that wait near the end of each level. Controls are simple but effective. You can lay prone (a good way to disappear into mud or tall grass), press up against walls, and easily access an inventory screen to equip and use items. You'll find a plethora of weapons along the way, perfect for those moments when stealth alone just isn't going to cut it.

The graphics are great, but it's the spot-on accurate control that makes this game truly shine. Players are free to practice in nearly 200 fun VR missions or can simply jump into the real thing: a 13-level campaign, complete with cut scenes. Konami packed an amazing amount of excitement into this little cartridge, making it a title no Game Boy Color owner will want to miss. --T. Byrl Baker

              Pros:

              • Nice graphics and animation for a GBC game
              • Much of the gameplay of the PlayStation hit compressed into a handheld format
              Cons:
              • Sometimes the screen just isn't big enough to make the game fair
              Average review score:

Astounding, I can't believe my eyes
With the blockbuster success of Metal Gear Solid for the PS1, Konami decided to make the game portable for Nintendo's 8-bit GameBoy Color, and while many specualtions over the quality of the game were not very good at all, every GBC owner on the planet was shocked when this was released. For being an 8-bit system, the graphics and sound are simply astounding, and the controls are exact and dead on. Stealth is still the name of the game and you'll have to dodge guards and security cameras to complete your mission, plus VR missions and cut scenes are here as well, making this game play so unbelieveably close to it's PS1 counterpart that many a gamer will be left in awe when they see it in action. The storyline is a prequel to the PS1 game that would set up the events that take place in that game, and while it may start out as a run of the mill story, it quickly picks up and by the time you finish the game you'll be catching your breathe. All in all, Metal Gear Solid is essential to action fans and GBC owners everywhere.

I'm a Game Freak Boy and just got Metal Gear Solid
I just ordered Metal Gear Solid a day ago and it KICKS BUTT. So far I'm at the forth stage and its been really fun. The game has all the guns from the Playstation version and has way cool graphics, sound, and gameplay. The sounds are just like midi form. Oh Have I said the VR missions KICK BUTT too. The reason why I say this is because it has 180 missions with weopons or sneeking or both. I also ordered another game so I can play VS Battle Mode and It Kicks Butt too. I would say this game is #1 for my gameboy It could also be yours So BuY It ToDaY!

              A GBC Masterpiece
Metal Gear Solid on the Gameboy Color is perhaps one of the most innovative the 8-bit handheld had. The game was released a few years ago but this is NOT a re-release of the PSX classic. Actually it only bears the same name. The plot and characters aren't connected to the playstation version in anyway.

Metal Gear Solid makes good use of the GBC's colors. This game is more colorful than a rainbow and the colors are vivid and bright (especially if you play it on a GBA SP). The graphics are also put to good use. It's a reminder of the graphics presented in the first Metal Gear game only you can now move in eight directions as opposed to four and most guards and such look clearer. But you'll definitely notice resemblence.

The game sounds pretty good for an 8 bit game. The music can get annoying at times but it clearly sets up the tone of the game (sneaking).

The game adopts the gameplay from the Playstation version. There is a sneak mode, alert mode and evasion mode. Sneak mode is simply that you just run from point to point without worrying about anything. As with the PSX version you have a radar in the corner of your screen. The radar isn't as detailed but it'll help you stay out of sight. Alert Mode happens if you're discovered by the enemy and so you must run away. Much like in the PSX version there's a countdown in the corner that covers the radar. When you successfully escape the enemy you go into Evasion Mode where you must hide and the enemy will stop chasing you and begin searching for you. Picture evasion mode like a game of hide and seek.

Metal Gear is known for its storytelling and MGS on the GBC is no exception. The game has several plot twist and such but that's just it. The game is full of TONS of twist. The story is great but the way the story is presented to the gamer is not to pleasing. The original playstation version had cinemas to make the storyline more interactive. The GBC has LONG LONG LONG cutscenes of Snake exchaning words with others. This wouldn't be so bad if the cutscenes weren't so long of just two people standing there. The Codec I didn't mind and it showcases more of just how well the graphics of the game are. But even codec conversations get long. If you're really into the story then you probably won't be falling asleep anytime soon.

As far as Extras go this game has a lot of them. Well, there is one HUGE extra. This would be the VR training. Many of the missions come from the PSX game "Metal Gear Solid VR: Missions" and the original MGS game but on the GBC they can be quite challenging. There are over 150 missions but most of them are repeats of earlier missions... only with a twist such as maybe a time limit or you're supposed to eliminate all the guards. Still, the VR missions will keep you busy for a while.

The other extra is after you complete the game once you get a new difficulty level (Very Hard mode). Difficulty levels in this game are NO joke. Unlike the PSX version there are more changes than just guards with wider range of vision. The most noticeable is there are MORE guards than you could possibly imagine on Very Hard mode.

Perhaps what I disliked most about MGS on the GBC was that it didn't have the power to make you love the characters. Many of them are stale without being able to see some emotion. That and some of the supporting characters play no real role in the game they're just there to take up space and carry on long conversations.

Overall though, for the GBC Metal Gear Solid is by far one of the best you could get.

              The Good

              +Great Storytelling
              +Great Gameplay

              The Bad

Originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Dragon Warrior III is a Game Boy Color port of one of the all-time classic role-playing games. The game reunites two of Japan's greatest RPG talents in Yuji Horii (story and game) and Akira Toriyama (character design). Toriyama is also known as the creator of the immensely popular Dragon Ball cartoons and comics. A prequel to the first two games in the series, DWIII casts you as the child of a great hero who must defeat an evil demon. New additions to the port include improved graphics, new minigames, new items, and a better translation of the original Japanese dialogue.

The game starts off with a personality test that loosely determines how other characters will react to you. Gameplay is standard RPG fare: exploring, building experience levels, acquiring allies, gaining weapons, and ultimately going after a large monster. There are some interesting minigames to mix things up. The Monster Medals feature adds a collectible aspect to the game. Monsters may leave medals behind after you defeat them. Some monsters only appear during certain times of the day. Getting all the medals unlocks a secret dungeon. You can trade medals via link cable to make things easier. Most RPG fans will love this game, but those raised on modern RPGs might find its combat a bit tedious. This game is compatible with Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance only. --Raymond M. Padilla

                Great game for GBC/GBA
Wow. I'm impressed. I have played this game on the original NES and I must say this is definitely a step-up from the NES version. For those who don't know much about the game, this series (Dragon Warrior) is hugely successful in both the U.S. and Japan, and in Japan it is almost as successful as the Final Fantasy series. DW I+II, released last year, prompted Enix to go ahead and port DW III. I'm so glad they did.

First off, you can have multiple classes to your characters over the course of the game. The world is huge and the battles are new in that the monsters have animations, and so do your attacks. From what I have played the difficulty seems just about as hard on the NES version. Also the passage of time is incorporated into this game, as night and day pass, and people have different things to say depending on the time and some people will be out at night, etc.

I haven't found anything that detracts from this game. I'm only about an hour into the game, but I'm impressed with what i've played so far. It makes an excellent game to play on breaks and when everyone leaves the office (it can get lonely at night when you are the only customer service rep in the place ;)). I'm very impressed with this game and if you liked DW I+II and/or Final Fantasy (all of them) you will definitely go for this game. It earns every ounce of recommendation I can give.

An excellent re-make of one of the best RPGs of all time
This is a very well done remake of the original Dragon Warrior III for the NES, a wonderful game, and above all a really fun RPG, something that recent RPGs haven't captured. This remake is very well done. Graphically the colors are very vibrant and the animations of both spells and enemies is a definite plus. My only gripe is they didn't put backgrounds in like they did in DW I remake, but that might be because of the graphical limitations of the gameboy color. Playwise the game has only been improved, adding tons more depth to your characters. Now they have personalities that guide how their stats increase, of course it also depends on the class. They have added a new mini-game in the Pachisi tracks, which are very interesting. They also added a concept of monster medals which you can randomly win after battles(there are 3 levels of medal, gold, silver, and bronze, you can't get a silver till you get a bronze etc) and if you collect enough medals you can unlock a secret. In addition, the ability to trade medals over the link is nice, but I still would have liked to have seen a battle mode, where your party can take on a friends party. The translation is also improved, being much more true to the Japanese version(which is why it recieved a Teen rating, the original was released when Nintendo was big on the family friendliness concept in the States). Overall, this is a must have RPG!

A True Classic, and Alot of Game for the Price
For those gamers that were fortunate enough to have played Dragon Warrior III on the NES, this will be just a reiteration of what you already know - this game rocks.

Even in the face of today's modern graphics and effects, the scope, storyline, and gameplay of Dragon Warrior III still stand strong. The characters can be customized in numerous areas, and even retrained if they aren't working out - you can take your Lvl 40 fighter and make him a wizard, or let your cleric train as a merchant. The number of sidequests and the evolution of certain areas is impressive, and will give you 60+ hours of things to do. Best of all, the fighting system is so simple that even a novice can start playing and get hooked immediately.

This game gets my highest possible recommendation. For a fraction of the cost of a Final Fantasy game, you can get a game that will give you more enjoyment for a longer period of time.

                Sequence
                Made by Jax Ltd Inc
                  Amazon base price: $19.99
With touches of canasta, rummy, and poker, this game could easily become a Friday-night favorite. The object is to get a "sequence," meaning a row of five poker-like chips on the game board. The board itself depicts lines of face-up playing cards. Players place their "crowning" chips on top of the card pictures, and can form sequences by using strategy and knowing which Sequence cards to keep or discard. Since forethought, luck, and backup plans are the keys to winning, this game is probably too sophisticated for children under 7 years old. (But young ones can team up with adults.) Included are 104 playing cards and 50 crowning chips in each color: red, blue, and green. --Gail Hudson

Easy game to learn - hard to master
I was first introduced to this game while my daughter was in the hospital. It was a game that always had players, players of all ages, and everyone enjoyed it.

While playing the game, the situations can change quickly - just when you have a plan, someone will play a jack and remove a crutial token, or will play a jack and take a crucial spot.

One rule - no table talk to coach your partnet, can give rise to various coversations, for example if you want your partner to play the 2 of hearts, my daughter came up with a conversation about how she LOVES her TWO dogs. Each of these tangents brings up a new converation for the players.

This has become a family favorite, and for every occasion it is set up and played by all who are there.

Adults and children can play on the same level, kids are sometimes the most brutal, they don't feel bad about taking your "place". While adults may think ahead more, the kids come up with cleaver methods to foil the adults.

I would highly recommend this game to any family or group as a fun way to spend the afternoon.

                  GREAT strategy game
At a glance, Sequence doesn't look like much, but it's one of those games that you can pull out any time and play over and over again for hours on end. We do, anyway! At every family holiday, we get the board going and people rotate in and out of Sequence all day long. One of the best things about it is how easily you can adapt the game to 2 to 6 players. It's quick and easy to learn and you can play fun and relaxed or competitive and serious. If you like Rummycube, you'll like Sequence.

                  Sequence vs Cranium

You don't have to be a game person to like this game, which plays easily from two to four people. It's got a playing board, poker chips, and uses two decks of cards. But you don't have to figure a lot out, or do a lot of math, or hold a lot of cards (just six at a time). It's part luck, part thinking and, with four persons, part teamwork. Not as thorny and infinitely long as chess, nor as obvious as checkers, not a strategic all-nighter like Risk, or a major undertaking like Monopoly. Not a way-too-educational game you got instead of a toy for your birthday (to your dismay). If you like all those games, you'd probably enjoy Sequence also. But if you're not a game person, and don't like all of the above, this might be the one game you would like. It's like hearing a clean joke that's actually funny, or finding non-alchoholic beer that tastes good. The odds are stacked against it, but Sequence may have beaten the odds. The only other game I like this much is Battleship, but if you hate Battleship, you may still like Sequence. If you've already got Cranium, empty the box out and put the Sequence pieces in the Cranium box. Then you've got the best of both worlds: a great game and great Gary Baseman box art.

                  Scattergories
                  Made by Milton Bradley
                    Amazon base price: $18.99
                    List price: $25.99 (that's 27% off!)
Scattergories is a fast-paced word game that's a real crowd pleaser. Each player takes a category list with 12 categories--such as vegetable, state, president, things you throw away--and must write down the name of one item that fits into each category. Sounds easy enough, but each item has to begin with a specific letter that is determined when the 20-sided die is rolled. For instance, you roll the letter "R." Your answer list for the above categories might look something like this: rutabaga, Rhode Island, Roosevelt, rubbish, etc. You have to think fast, because a round lasts only 3 minutes! Players score points for each unique answer. --Alison Golder

                    Years of fun!
We have had this game for probably 10 years and we still love it. It is so much fun to play because the answers are unlimited and the game is different every time depending on what letters that you get. We have almost run out of the blank sheets in some of the little boards but a blank sheet of paper works fine too. We have played this with people of all ages and it is a blast. It is easy so almost everyone gets right into it! Definitely a must for your game closet!

                    Party Game!!
This is our game of choice when my family gets together with our best friends. This game is especially hillarious when you make up words and try to convince the other players to let you have the point for it. For instance, one time the letter was "W" and one of the subjects on the list was "something sticky", I wrote down "Wolf's Mouth". We all about died laughing. Now, even to this day, all I have to say is "Wolf's mouth", and we all crack up. You could play this game for hours and before you know it, it's the end of the night. There is no game that is more fun then this.

Great for many types of people.
I got this for Christmas and me and my sisters (cometimes our parents join in) always play this. It never gets old!! Even if we repeat a list, we come up with new answers. I disagree with the label "12 and up" because my sisters are 10 and 11 (9 and 10 when we started playing it) and they can do it with no problem. Granted I get more than them, since I'm 15, but they still do great.

Anyway, to play Scattegories, first you choose a letter and a list. Say the letter was "G" and the list included "boy names". Well, if I put Gregory, and so did one of my sisters, neither of us would get the point. If someone repeats your answer, you don't get any points. However, say I put "Gavin", Jordan put "Gregory" and Taryn put "Guy", then we'd all get the point. You have to make sure to think outside of the box (don't put the most popular band as an answer, or the city you live in!).

A Classic, Always Fun To Play.
Everyone recognizes Monopoly as the "classic" board game. Everyone loves it. Monopoly is a hit with all ages, young and old. It is educational for the young ones, teaching money budgeting tactics and some real-world buying and selling scenarios. The idea of real estate conquest sometimes goes to a player's head, so games can be rather competitive. However, Monopoly will always be fun for all players, and is worth the initial invest for hours of fun in the future. With this edition, Parker Brothers adds some nice new creature comforts like an organizational deed carousel, redesigned money, gold-finished tokens and a new train playing piece. These new features are defenitely worth the extra 7 dollars.
