Best shooter of its type for me!
This is itGradius is a side scrolling shooter, just like the shooters in the arcades 10 years ago. The main thing with Gradius is that you buy your weapons instead of picking them up. The more power ups you collect (without buying) the better the weapon.
Gradius first appeared in the Arcades, and became a HUGE hit.
It has appeared on NES, SNES, Playstaion (but Japan only, which is a real shame), and Playstation 2.) The best thing about Gradius is probably this though: It has ALWAYS stayed the same, with some exceptions:
Gradius: LifeForce (NES) added 2 players on screen.
Gradius III (SNES) added tactical weapons placement.
I remember the first time I played this series on Nintendo, and it ruled! Then came LifeForce, also for Nintendo, and it actually had 2 player mode (like both players on the screen at the same time! Yes!!) So LifeForce is actually the best game in the series in my opinion.
The second best version is Gradius III for the Super Nintendo. It didn't have 2 player, but hey: It had something cool instead: Tactical weapons placement, i.e you could choose where your weapons would be placed on your ship. You could choose an offencive or defence stance! Gradius III was thrown along with IV in the first Playstation 2 release, but was much harder, and without the original SNES music. (I can't say if this is the original music that came in the arcade version or not, because I haven't played the arcade version. But I at least like the SNES version a lot better.)
Next came a sad story: A great game, that recieved excellent ratings, didn't come to Europe or USA. Too bad about Gradius Gaiden, which only came out in Japan, a game which also had two players at the same time on screen.
The version on the Playstation 2 was a tadd more difficult, and the music was not the music I was used to on the SNES (which is far better.) On the cover it said "2 player." But that wasn't 2 player, it was only 2 players taking turns in playing. Boooh!
Gradius III & IV on the Playstation 2 was a HUGE let down.
The music was not so cute and catchy as before, far more difficult (as in impossible), and IV had actually become worse than III (III was much more durable in weapon selection.)
But, despite the let down on Playstation 2, Konami decides to give it another go, and release "V"! Yes!! I hope they pay attention to what fans have been saying. Keep the gameplay intact, try not to get ultra sorround sound crystal music (because that just isn't the good old game man), and please, if at all possible, let's see 2 players on screen (this is asking a lot, but please???!) What the news so far says though, is that the game will now have the same weapon system as on Gradius III, but with even more weapons. Yes! :)
So, ok, I gave you my rant now, hope it adds to the page, and your excitement about this new release.
And let's all hope that this new game embraces nostalgia freaks, as well as high tech new comers to shooters, and the Gradius phenomenon.

Works on PS2(Obviousely)!
This controller has it all
Certinally worth purchase for serious Playstation players.

My kids love this even more than UNO, and we have created a version we call "worms or two headed snakes" that they think is hysterical. They are 4 and 6 years old, and have been playing this for a year. They are learning how to be good sports, especially when someone else gets to collect the 22 card snake we all wanted to win. We all cheer for the person who gets creative and combines snakes. I can see this being good for the preschool set learning their colors as well.
If you are looking for a good quick simple and entertaining family game, HISSS would be a great choice. We love it : )

Coolest Game EVER!

Hoyle Board Games and Xp
This is a super collection of games!
Hoyle Board Games has turned the family into addicts!

We have enjoyed the books and now we enjoy the game. The pictures on the game look like they come right from the book.
I particularly like that this game will grow with my children. There are riddle cards that you can use in one type of game. And directions for other games as well.
Enjoy.
A classic game with a refreshing new look.

To help you start your Game Boy Advance collection, we've created this special bundle, which includes the games Fire Pro Wrestling and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and selected accessories. In Fire Pro Wrestling, you can enter the ring solo--or with a friend for some tag-team action--and execute dozens of moves, holds, and throws. In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, players perform hundreds of complicated tricks for points, and can ride as T. Hawk or any of a dozen pros in the game. We've also included an AC power adapter to help you save on batteries, a Worm Light Advance to help you play through those low-light situations, and a Game Boy holster so you can keep the system at the ready.
The Game Boy platform (which includes the original unit, the Game Boy Pocket, and the Game Boy Color) came to market when most video game consoles had a life expectancy of just a few years. More than a decade later, the system is still going strong. How did the Game Boy successfully compete--and in some cases bury--an onslaught of faster, more powerful handheld and home console systems? Let us count the ways: affordability, a huge library of games that consistently made the most of the hardware's limitations, smart power management that extended battery life, and uncluttered controls. But perhaps it was the system's ultraportable design that allowed devotees to play video games around their schedules, thus making it the must-have system for kids and adults alike.
Now the Game Boy Advance (or GBA as people are already calling it) comes to us with power that would have been unthinkable back in the day. The portable's 32-bit RISC CPU runs circles around the former's 8-bit workhorse, allowing it to process program instructions much faster. What that means to everyday gamers is more intricate visuals, more simultaneous movement on the screen, and better sound. In fact, the often-annoying beeps and boops of old-school Game Boy titles are being replaced with digitized stereo sound. The extra processing muscle also means you can network up to four Game Boy Advance units together, via the communication cable, for multiplayer fun off of one shared cartridge. Only two Game Boy Color units could link together, and each unit had to have a copy of the game.
What's not being replaced, however, is the wide selection of Game Boy games. Because the Game Boy Advance system is backward-compatible, it will play its own line of colorful games--including such launch titles as Super Mario Advance, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Army Men Advance, High Heat Major League Baseball 2002, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2--as well as all of the monochrome and color games that have already been released for the previous Game Boy systems (nearly 500 of them in total). Players can view the older games in their smaller, originally square dimensions, or, with the touch of the shoulder button, expand the game to fit the GBA's larger screen. We tried enlarging the screen on a Game Boy Color edition of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and found that Mr. Hawk was much easier to see.
When you first pick up the system, you'll be amazed at how lightweight it is. At fewer than 5 ounces and a little larger than a deck of playing cards, the system easily fits into a shirt pocket without any sag. The GBA's wider shape fits better into a wider range of hands. The former design too often pushed the left and right thumb knuckles together during gameplay. The new layout should be comfortable for all ages, and the center screen orientation makes it easy to see.
Game Boy Color owners will find the GBA's larger screen somewhat darker than they're used to, but that's because the screen is outfitted with antiglare technology. Like the old Game Boyy Color, the color LCD is not backlit, so you need pretty good light to play by. Unlike that system, though, you won't be craning your neck and tilting the unit to see around the hot-spot reflection of the light bulb in your screen.
But you'll also notice the graphics. Sporting what's basically a redesigned SNES technology, you'll see things on the GBA that the big consoles do, such as scaling (making objects larger or smaller) and rotation effects--technological advances that will affect the look of everything from crossing a finish line to throwing a touchdown pass to crawling through a dungeon.
Some might argue that Nintendo could have put even more power into the Game Boy Advance. After all, the 32-bit video game had its heyday more than five years ago. Perhaps, but after handling this new handheld, we're inclined to think that Nintendo wisely struck a balance among size, price, and power consumption. And considering how well the old 8-bit system weathered the decade's technological storms, we think the Game Boy Advance is here to stay, and we're glad. --Porter B. Hall
