Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys Magic Castle
Made by ExploraToy
Age Group: 6 - 12 years
    Amazon base price: $
    List price: $10.99 (that's NaN% off!)
The Magic Castle Aquarium is small enough to hold in your hand, but large enough to provide shelter for a village of sea-monkeys. It all starts with a packet of dehydrated sea-monkey eggs. Once a home has been prepared, stir in the eggs and watch them hatch right before your eyes. Their home is actually an underwater castle at the base of a clear container to which you add pure bottled or boiled water. Air holes at the rim of the container keep the water oxygenated. The set also comes with a water purifier, sea-monkey food, Amazing Plasma III (no one knows quite what that is), a measuring spoon, a large droplet for agitating the water, a magnifying lid, and more. These sea-monkeys are guaranteed to live at least two years, if properly cared for. The set is supplemented with a detailed instruction pamphlet and an order form for the 32-page Official Sea-Monkey Handbook on the box. For children under 8 years of age, this kit will likely require parental assistance to set up. --Diane Beall

    They are o.k.
I got some sea monkeys and was really excited to see them hatch and grow. They did grow and develop and they grew pretty big but they were kind of boring to watch. I wasn't really satisfied though. I knew and did take care of them as much as I could but the tank got really nasty and it was too gross and dirty to look at. I wasn't very satisfied and didn't get what I expected.

I am SO a sea monkey breeder now!
I LOVE sea monkeys now, and it's thanks to this set that I do. I've even got babies now! It is so much fun, and not a big deal to take care of. Some people might say, "Sea monkeys? Why? They're just dumb little fish! A total waste of money!" NNNOOOOTTT! Sea monkeys are brine SHRIMP, and they are extrememly active from the minute that they're born. (Lots of fun to watch)

a fun project for kids and adults
I bought my 5 year old daughter the "Sea-Monkys Magic Castle" for a reward. She has had so much fun watching them hatch and grow from tiny specs into full grown shrimp. She loves the fact that there is a castle in the tank. I like this product because it is small and compact, about the size of a snow globe. We followed the directions exactly, except we used tap water instead of bottled water. They still hatched!!!!! They are still growing and seem to be thriving. We aerate the tank everyday to give them some oxygen. My daughter liked her Sea-Monkeys so much we decided to buy some for her nana to have on her desk at work. If you want an inexpensive, low maintainance pet; Sea Monkeys are the way to go!!!!!

    Fur Real Friends Kitten: White
    Made by Hasbro
    Age Group: 5 - 11 years
      Amazon base price: $
      List price: $24.99 (that's NaN% off!)
This battery-operated pet is surprisingly realistic in the way it responds to good old-fashioned tender loving care. From the outside, this toy appears to be simply a lovable stuffed animal. The long soft white hair, sweet pink nose, and blue eyes make it look like a real kitten. The unusual thing, though, is the way this kitty responds to a person’s touch. Pet the kitten’s back and she will meow, purr, and move her paws in a kneading action. When kitty is hungry, just feed her by placing the included feeding bottle up to her mouth and listen as she slurps away. All these reactions are controlled by a special sensor on the kitten’s back which responds to a person’s touch. For a child who is too young for a real pet, this toy feline may be the next best thing. For a child who wants something huggable, this may not be the right way to go--the internal mechanics are hard and prevent you from giving this little pet a good squeeze. Three AAA batteries required (included).

      Purrfect!!!
This toy is perfect for anyone who is allergic to kittens or can't have one.It makes tons of cute kitten sounds and is very fun to play with!It is educational because it teaches you how to take care of a real kitten, like to take care of it,feed it, and to show respect to it.It has been VERY durable and I've had it for a LONG time and it never got broke! The only thing is to not drop it a lot, instead treat it the right way!!
      GREAT product,Hasbro ^_^

      Dakota Spring Horse
      Made by Hedstrom Corp.
      Age Group: 36 months - 6 years
        Amazon base price: $
Perhaps a better variation on the ol' rocking horse in theory than in practice. This all-plastic Silver to your Lone Ranger rides 26 inches high (at the saddle) on its wide metal and plastic frame. The four spring-mounts offer a soft, pleasant ride, and the frame gives great stability--if you can put it together securely. We found the assembly fiddly and frustrating, however, and our sample came with incorrectly sized bolts. And the handlebar, which fits through a hole in the nape of Silver's neck, rattles back and forth, making the whole toy seem cheaply made. --Richard Farr

        Fun and easy horsey!!!
Hello, I am a 21 year old single mother of a little boy who will be turning 2 on April 25 and this horse is not hard to assemble at all!!! I dont know why so many people complain about how hard it is, but you just have to stick to it till the end. I did break out in a sweat, but hey this is good exercise!, and finished in half an hour. My son will be so thrilled to get this for his b-day since he always rides it when he sees it on display in toy stores and frankly, I dont know how much more my back could of handled being his "imaginary" horse but not anymore! LoL!

Great for a little buckaroo, but beware of assembly
We have an active 2-year-old so for the birthday boy we purchased a Dakota spring horse at our local Toys R Us after researching these thru Amazon. The reviews I read were right, the assembly IS a nightmare. My husband is a furniture builder by trade and usually handy, but it took him over an hour, with ranting, to put this horse together. The assembly instructions make assumptions and are not particularly clear. It seems less thought was put into the direction book than should have been. HOWEVER, now that the horse is put together, it is a big hit with our son and the look on his face when he rides it makes even Daddy smile. Seems to be sturdy enough even for our rambunctious boy, a great climber, that didn't have any problem figuring out how to get on this toy. If you can possibly purchase this horse locally already assembled, it would be worth it. I think this will be something that will be played with a lot.

        Childhood memories!
Do not let the other reviews scare you away from this great toy. The printed directions are a bit tricky to follow, but this is not hard to put together!! We were skeptical after reading reviews, but so happy that we decided to give it a go. Everything was in the box and ready to go. Our kids love it (perhaps not as much as nostalgic mom and dad do though!!!)

          very short battery life-span!
My daughter loved this toy. The quack-quack-quack was so cute; but the batteries died soon after we got it and can't be replaced. It also tips over pretty easy. It would be better if it had replaceable batteries and the wheel base was a little wider. I think my daughter would play with it more often if it still had sound effects.

          turn grumpy mood into giggles
Though this toy is not intended for my daughter's age group, she loves it! She is only nine months old so I have to watch her carefully with it as the string is a hazard for such a little one. We got this toy as a hand-me-down. The funny quacking makes her giggle every time we pull the string. I hope that she enjoys it as much when she's old enough to walk with it.

          Batteries CANNOT be replaced!
As an experienced mom of four I actually find this toy adorable and I didn't notice a problem of them tipping over. Most pull toys they make these days tip easier than the ones my oldest played with.
HOWEVER-beware- YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE BATTERIES. And they just aren't as cute without the quack quack, quack quack, quack quack, quaaack. :O)
Also-how many times was that string pulled while the toy sat on a toy store shelf before *you* bought it???
Cute toy but limited life span.

            Love Melissa & Doug puzzles!!
I have not been dissappointed with ANY of Melissa & Doug puzzle...we have 7 now. This is the first for our youngest and I look forward to playing with the fuzzy farm pieces with him. A durable, safe edged puzzle that is colorful but not scary for little ones. My hat is off to Melissa & Doug once again.

            cute puzzle to learn with
Our son received this as a gift for Easter this past year. He isn't much on puzzles but this one really caught on. He likes the fuzzy animals I think the best, but he has become quite good at putting them in their proper places. It's also been a good tool to teach him the animals and to *nicely* pet the animals. His favorite is the little duck as it ends up in is crib quite often. Very cute puzzle with the extra added bonus of the peices being soft. Puzzle and pieces are made of wood (except the fuzzy coats) so it holds up well and the price is reasonable.

            Excellent First Puzzle
I got this for my daughter just before her first birthday, and she loved it--I think probably because the fuzzy pieces are as much like toys as anything else. They are among the first farm animals that children learn the names of, and she enjoyed repeating their names and making their sounds. The other puzzles she got were just puzzles, but it was as though this one had a personality that made it a toy as well. I don't think it's a good puzzle for an older toddler, but at one year most children's "shape-fitting" skills are pretty limited. I think a puzzle with a few, simple pieces that can double as toys is a great first puzzle for the 12-month old set.

            Hungry Hungry Hippos
            Made by Milton Bradley
            Age Group: 36 months - 6 years
              Amazon base price: $
Four hippos try to eat as many marbles as they can--as fast as they can. This game is fast-paced and riotous for kids who get to take turns popping a white marble into the ring, then furiously pressing on their hippo's levered tail to catch the prize. As if that's not enough, in the advanced game, all 20 marbles are released at the same time. Utter mayhem ensues, and whoever snares the most marbles wins. If only it would get kids to clean their plates as well as those pudgy hippos do! --Lynne Sampson

              VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MOST DEFINATLY NOT THE GAME I GREW UP WITH!!!! THIS VERSION OF HUNGRY HIPPOS IS TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTING!!!! DON'T BUY IT!!! IT WILL NOT STAY TOGETHER FOR EVEN A FEW MINUTES OF PLAY!! THE "MARBLES" ARE CHEEP HOLLLOW PLASIC BALLS AND THE HIPPOS DISCONNECT FROM THE GAME WITH EVEN HIT. IF THEY AREN'T FALLING OFF THE GAME THEN THEY WILL STICK. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PLAY A COMPLETE GAME (NOT EVEN PART OF A GAME) WITHOUT GIVING UP IN FRUSTRATION. (...)

              Very dissapointed
My son received this gift for Christmas two years ago. I was very excited as I remember playing this game as a child. I was soooo disappointed!! It is definitely NOT the sturdy game I remember from my childhood days. The hippos tend to get stuck w/the handles down. For the adults...not a problem...but very frustrating for little ones. And the "marbles" don't roll around very well. Overall...not a good buy in my opinion.

              Piece of Junk
I bought this game for my 5 year old son, because I remebered how much fun I had playing it when I was 5. This is not the same game that I remebered, the marbles are cheap plastic things that aren't even completely round and the whole game would fall apart after just a few seconds of play. We tried 5 or 6 times to get it to stay together, we even tried taping it. Nothing worked, it was in the garbage after just 1 day of use. Do not buy this game!

              Animal Planet Infrared T-Rex
              Made by Toys "R" Us
              Age Group: 4 - 9 years
                Amazon base price: $
Dinosaur devotees will be roaring over this radio-controlled Tyrannosaurus Rex as he growls and roars, moves his head, thrashes his tail, and even blinks his beady yellow eyes. He can also turn realistically and walk forward a few steps on a hard surface, growling and roaring at the same time, if you choose. T-Rex is 11 inches tall and 21 inches from nose to tail, with textured, flexible brown rubber skin that bends and moves. The controller is shaped like a stone with two bone-shaped joysticks to control the dinosaur's walking and turning. Buttons on the side of the controller make T-Rex move his head and front feet, snap his jaws, roar, and blink his eyes. The controller slides open in the middle for use, and you have to be careful not to pinch your fingers when you snap it shut. T-Rex requires a total of six AA batteries, two for the controller and four inside the dinosaur, and the battery compartment inside the T-Rex is rather difficult to access. Despite these small drawbacks, this dino is one cool dude that will thrill any kid in the midst of the inevitable dinosaur phase. -- Marcie Bovetz

This toy is the best! Worth your money!
My favorite dinosaur is the Tyrannosaurus Rex, so i bought it. The toy is completely reilistic! It has everything you wish for in a R/C toy! It's head is very great and reilistic and it's sounds are too! But be careful. After about 3 or 2 years, i was playing with the toy when suddenly it's ankle snapped in half. My mom can't get it back together again. So be careful about bagnning this toy around like a doll. If you do it's going to breck soon. But if you don't, it lasts for about 3 or 4 years. But since my birthday's coming up in 3 weeks, my mom is going to buy another one! I thank Jesus for this wonderful toy! :)

T-Rex is pretty cool, but winds up in the closet anyway.
I had high expectations for this bad boy, but let me give you the pros and cons:

                Pros:

Mobility, coupled with an array of growls, roars and twitches, will keep your attention for a short while. I do give the creators credit for a sincere effort at realism, however...

                Cons:

The clawlike arms are not mechanized, and just hang there.
There is a loud clicking sound (gears?) as he moves his head.
Although the legs move, the tail is stiff and non-functional (tags along on non-powered wheels protruding from below).
The big guy has trouble negotiating anything other than smooth, flat surfaces.

Basically, I think the problem with toys such as this, is simply the lack of child interaction. After a short time, the novelty wears off, and junior goes scurrying back to the lego blocks. I also purchased a very well-conceived E.T. figure for my 5-yr. old son (4 at the time). The vocal effects were excellent, but like Mr. T-Rex, he was soon gathering dust in a box in the closet.

Bottom-line: Child interaction is priority #1. A good jigsaw puzzle will beat the heck out of fancy, mechanized toys. Fool me twice - shame on me.

Very poor quality, cheap mechanical parts, VERY disappointed
I orded this toy for my son's main Christmas present. I put the batteries in and tried it out. Half of the functions didn't even work. I returned it for a replacement. (Very easy and convienent return policy!) When I got the 2nd one a few days later, all of the buttons worked, but the gears and mechanics where of HORRIBLE quality and very cheaply put together. The gears would miss and get stuck on some of the funtions and it would just jerk around. The gears are incredibly LOUD! It constantly made a VERY loud high pitched screeching noise as it's head moved around. This toy is a neat idea, but just too cheaply made. After trying out 2 separate dinos, I recomend you pass this one up and find a different toy for your kiddos.

                  Fun with Octotunes
I bought this for my son and when I took it out of the package and played it for my two month old son, he could not keep his eyes off of it. The colors facinated him, the sounds amazed him and he just wanted to stay focused on it as long as possible. He looked at it for hours, smiles at it and finds great enjoyment. I feel he will get plenty of use out of this fun, educational toy as well as being durable to take everywhere with him. I would highly recommend this for any baby to encourage thier visualization & listening skills, then motor skills later.

                  Great for everyone
We brought this toy for our son when he was 4 weeks old. Although we doubted he would be able to operate the legs on his own for a while yet it has prooven to be a fantastic way for adults to interact with him. He started by watching and smiling or just staring when we played the leg's. It then became something of interest for him to reach out for and then chew on. He's just about five month's now and when he see's it on the ground gives it a big smile and tries to wiggle around to grab at it. We love to sit down with him and squeal the legs while he mouths any part he can get to. I think it's a fantastic investment for those parents that really want to enjoy and be part of their children's lives.

Bought it for the long haul
I took a chance buying this toy. I felt it was expensive, but reasoned that although my then 6 mo. old baby would not use it for more than a teether, he'd later be able to play it himself at age 2+. My son liked it initially, but beyond grabbing it and eating the handle, legs and tassles, he was not able to play it except by accident or with his feet by 8+ months. I (and other adults) play songs or notes for him, which he likes, and am hoping that in the future he'll play with it rather than use it as an expensive teether. He tries, but it's hard for him to play notes right now. I did not know that the toy was scented and thought it was from the strong-smelling odors of the store from which it was purchased. I do not like artificial scents, but it doesn't bother me now. If you like long-term toys, this is a nicely colorful, non-electronic purchase that encourages interactive play. I use it to also teach colors and or general play. I would give it 5 stars once my baby can play the notes.

                  Blue & Green LeapPad Backpack

                    Leap to Order
For the price this is a great accessory for your LeapPad! My son gets twice the number of cartridges and books it it with plenty of room to spare. We even have some ziplocks with extras that can fit in no problem. The padded straps are easy on the shoulders and everything is neat and safely transported from grams house to friends to the doctor's office and everywhere in between. If you travel with your little one and their pad this is a great help.

Oh and big deal about the color difference. IF that's such a concern that it warrants a trip back to the store you have WAY too much time on your hands. My advice: use that extra time to read with your child! Life is too short and childhood too precious.

The price is great and IT WORKS just as it should and more. Another great Amazon offering.

Get the LeapPad Storage System instead
Go to Walmart.com. They have a LeapPad Storage System, which holds 12 cartridges and books, for $20. It has a handle so it's just as easy for kids to lug around. And, in my opinion, is much more attractive and practical than a backpack. A much better deal.

                    Perfect accessory
Just wanted to let everyone know that if your child has the leapfrog, this is a perfect addition. My son receieved the frog for x-mas, and I could not find a case anywhere. The books and tapes were everywhere, know they are all together, and he thinks it is cool to have a little backpack. Plus as an added bonus, the green and blue, are the same colors as the leapfrog, so we also coordinated.

Two sturdy plastic stirrups along with smooth handles on either side of the horse's head give young wranglers something to hold on to as they take this proud stallion out for an easy back-and-forth ride. My twin girls (almost 3) love this horse!! We actually have an older version of it, but it is pretty much the same. Because ours is older, I can't say anything for the durability except that the one we have has lasted about 8 years. Every kid that comes to our house (usually around age 3-4) LOVES this horse!! It seems so simple, but my girls will take turns riding forever!! It does require an amount of supervision, especially with younger children. My girls also like it when I "bounce" them or "make the horsey go fast (bounce really fast)" They have lots of fun pretending, which is VERY educational! The assembly wasn't simple, but it wasn't terrible. Ours is hard to get level -- it took some twisting so it didn't rock. It is kind of big in our small playroom, but it actually wasn't as big as I expected. We plan to move it outside very soon.

                      cheap immitation - shop around
I shopped around the internet for this horse and bought it here because it was the cheapest, but I didn't realize until I put it together that this one (from Amazon) DOES NOT have sound. Most "Midnight" models from Hedstrom have motion activated sounds. Also the paint was sprayed on very sparingly. Not the top quality I expected from Hedstrom. Too late now...
