In particular, the addition of 3-D graphics brings new life to this well-traveled game, though it is odd to play without the now-infamous pixilated square enemies creeping toward the bottom of the screen. There are also a wider variety of enemy ships, guns, special powers, mother ships, and squadron formations to contend with. You can try your luck on your own, or get a second player to help you during combat, which is great for players with short attention spans. There are plenty of chances to gain extra lives, which helps those of us who lost more than a few quarters on this game at the arcade. Space Invaders is perfect if you don't want to play a game with a long, drawn-out plot. --Carrie Bell
Pros:
- Beloved arcade hit
- Updated graphics, speed, and joystick response
- Good gift for all ages, but especially those who remember the original
- Simplistic gameplay, no plot--may not be complicated enough for gamers who don't remember the original

A Great Revision to a Classic Game

Entertained is what you'll be once you've installed these games. X-Wing lets players pilot A-wings, Y-wings, B-wings, and (of course) X-wings in dozens of missions against the evil Empire. Although Rebel ships have the advantage of being equipped with shields, don't expect any mercy--the game is infamous for containing some of the toughest missions of all time.
TIE Fighter turns the tables by letting players work their way up in the Imperial ranks. Several types of TIE ships are modeled, from the ungainly TIE bomber to the incredibly agile TIE defender. In both games the controls are about as perfect as they can get in a game of this type, and campaign missions play out with convincing voice acting and great plot twists. The graphics pale in comparison to a newer game like X-Wing: Alliance, but there's so much gameplay in these CD-ROMs that we barely had time to notice. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- A few hundred fun, challenging missions to play through
- Many different ships
- Sound effects and music straight out of the movies
- Perfectly captures the excitement and feel of Star Wars
- Updated graphics still don't look as good as those found in modern space simulators

would be more fun if wasn't so difficultYou get a manual, a quick reference guide and 2 CD-ROMs containing a total of 3 titles: "X-Wing", "Tie Fighter" and "X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter: Flight School" (a demo of an improved title).
this was the first game(s) I ever bought and was hoping for a good space flying/shooting sim that's fun and not too difficult. I got half of what I wanted...it looks good and the tutorials are fun and simple, but like most of these type games, most of us can only finish the first 2 levels before being inundated with unenjoyably heavy fleets and relentless laser fire.
WOW!! THESE ARE GOOD GAMES!
Oh...My...GodI remember getting this game for my birthday way the heck back in 1992. The missions were so fun and CHALLENGING now this is a word that most people in the computer game industry seem to have forgotten. The appeal of this game for me was that because it took so much time to complete(I think I managed it in 2 years) the victories were all the swetter when you won.
Nowadays you can just type in a cheat code and skip to the end well keep in mind that such a thing did not exist on the old DOS machines.
X-wing was the first but later on Lucas-arts improved the engine by adding TIE FIGHTER (that's right a game where you play on the side of the Imperials) this also provides some very challenging missions but can be beaten with much more ease that anyone could ever beat x-wing. Still fun, just as enjoyable
Now X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter brings us relatively up to date combing elements of both games what you have is a game that is more useful for multiplayer than single player missions. This is finally where the age of this type of game in this type of format began to show. Most of the missions in this game were just repeats of the same missions in X-Wing and Tie Fighter. Although the graphics are better and there are one or two missions that provide a great level of enjoyment.
If any of you old dogs out there are still using 98 or 95 pick up a piece of gaming history and get a copy of this package.

Still the best space combat game!Playing XWing now (the updated version included in the collectors CD) it still feels fresh which is an amazing achievment when you consider it is now 10 years old. It may not have cutting edge graphics but they work well enough and still manage to give a smooth and convincing 3D feel. The combat and power management gameplay is still engrossing even by modern standards. To be honest the gameplay stil knocks some of the more recent Lucasarts console based space combat games into touch.
The updated in game orchestral music score is lifted straight from the movies and is a vast improvement on the 1993 Xwing's midi version. This is one of the best and evocative uses of the original John Williams score in any of the Star Wars games. (Much better than in Jedi Knight 2!) You really live the Star Wars experience in this game. (Not only that but you can put the CDRom into a CD player and get the music in full on stereo Hi Fi quality.)
If there is one critisism it is the difficulty. Tie Fighter the sequel game (also on the CD) is much more fondly remembered than Xwing but that may have something to do with the fact it is a much easier game to get into (plus the fact you are the bad guy which is more fun). XWing is hard with a capital H but I think that makes it so much more satifying when you get that mission complete message.
If you like Star Wars, especially the space combat bits towards the end of Return of the Jedi and you have an older PC (even a 486!!!) this is an ideal purchase.

As you progress in the game, you can customize and upgrade your equipment. In champion mode, you will have to finish a level with a good enough destroy rate before you will be allowed to advance. This game also includes a replay mode, which will allow you to leisurely view highlights of your most intense battles.
While this game may be pretty to look at, the controls can be difficult to master. You'll definitely need to check out the training zones in order to properly learn how to navigate your hunk of junk metal. We became dizzy from the rotating 3-D and 360-degree environments, which can make your control seem more complicated during a busy barrage of enemy fire from all directions. --Carrie Bell
Pros:
- Interesting plot
- Detailed spaceships and explosions
- Full 3-D, 360-degree rotating action
Cons:
- Shooting action can get repetitious
- May cause dizziness

Great game, but not much replay value.
Highly playable shooter balancing looks and mechanics. If anything, I might have wished there would be a little more diversity in terms of weapons, levels, missions and some kind of a story. Imagine the customizeability of Armored Core coupled with the furious action and beautiful graphics of this game! However, that didn't seem to be the intention of the designers. As an old-fashioned "blow-everything-up" shooter, Omega Boost ranks among the best there is to offer.
blow stuff up in outer spaceThis game has it all. The story is pretty decent. I won't spoil it here. The graphics are gorgeous. Absoloutly incredable, just be sure that when you play this game for the first time, you play it with no one else around, lest someone accidently step on your jaw when it falls to the floor. The music is very cool too. The intro music rocks big time and the in game stuff is funky. The game itself is just a brainless shoot em up. Like R-type on steroids. and a hundread times more fun. All this stuff combines to give you a great fun game that anyone can play and enjoy.
Give it shot. You'll be glad you did

Could Have Been Much Better..So what happened to Battlezone 2? Those elements are still in this version but alot of the fun is missing. This game had very few thrills in it. The ability to call in airstrikes was fun, squad-based tank combat is always a good time but the game did'nt meet my expectations. Also, the 3D accellerated graphics in the game are wasted; it makes alot of things look fake or just plain goofy looking, especially the enemy vehicles.
The developers were too quick to jump on the 3D bandwagon when they had no "new" game to sell. The first Battlezone is still better. My opinion: it is worth about 10 bucks, don't pay anymore and don't expect to be playing it for a long time.

Pretty good, but could be better
It's a great game
GREAT GAMEARE YOU SUPPOSED TO FEEL LIKE YOUR MOVING IN YOUR LITTLE SHIP?
Probably, but it doesn't work to well. When you're first playing the game, it can be confusing and you can get "Lost in Space".
Why?
Because, first of all, all of the controls are new to you and you don't know what is what in the cockpit. So if you turn, your facing a [blank] picture of space - and you can't find your way back to the battle. But you get used to it. But it's still annoying!
So why did I give this game five stars?
Because EXCEPT FOR THE ABOVE, (and a little more at the bottom) IT'S GREAT! YOU REALLY FEEL LIKE YOU'RE THERE! ONCE YOU KNOW THE CONTROLS AND WHAT EVERYTHING MEANS, YOU'RE HAVING SUCH A GOOD TIME, YOU DON'T GET OFF TILL MIDNIGHT!
G-R-E-A-T G-A-M-E-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GET IT!
WARNING: If you don't currently have a joystick, don't get the game! It requires a joystick to play! (I had to go through that, and it wasn't fun.)

Game play means creating and maintaining a flourishing society on a hostile alien world. Players must juggle dozens of civilization settings--such as government style, unit production, and pollution prevention--and discover the best means of conquering enemies through a powerful economy, research and development, or military conquest. Alternatively, players and computer-controlled factions can become allies instead of enemies and trade technologies and unit designs to further bolster scientific advancements and economy.
With an exciting new story line, dozens of enhancements, and tried-and-true game play that adds hours of life to the original game, Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire is a must-have expansion pack for Alpha Centauri fans. Remember that you'll need Alpha Centauri in order to play and enjoy Alien Crossfire. --Doug Radcliffe

Alpha Centauri enhanced with new factions and moreAlien Crossfire puts the Alpha Centauri game in the center of this conflict, as the factions we all know and love are caught between the Caretakers and Preservers, two alien factions diametrically opposed to each other and any who would ally with the other. New Human factions to play such as the Cyborgs and Pirates just add to the fun. New unit types, and planetary features such as the Manifold Nexus make the Alpha Centauri experience even richer than the already excellent basic game.
An excellent expansion with a few flawsI had a few objections...namely, The council doesn't seem to work to well with only 5 governments, and they're weren't really enough new techs, wonders, weapons, graphic changes and new ways to beat the game for my taste. My only other objections are that the Aliens seem a little to powerful, especially at the beginning, and and I thought it would have been cool to coexist with them, instead of wiping them out.
Even with it's flaws it's a great expansion! The new human factions (Pirates, Drones, Consciousness, Planet Cult, and Datatechs) are fantastic fun! The alien factions are overpowered, irritating, and suck the life out of the game in my opinion. Fortunately you can play without them. Too bad you can only have seven factions max in a game as playing with the 12 human factions would be incredible fun!
The new planetary features are worth having for sure. The Manifold Nexus is mysterious and worth fighting over. The crash site of the Unity spaceship has lots of goodies to dig up, and the borehole fields are nice to build near.
The new technologies add a lot of excitement to the game along with new base installations like the Aquafarm which gives you more food from kelp farms or the Flechette missile defense which gives you better defense from missile attacks. Brood pits make even bigger and more dangerous mind worms, spore launchers, sealurks, and isles of the deep. New Technologies like marine detatchments can be added to ships so you can board and capture enemy ships! Four new secret projects are also made available: Planetary Energy Grid (energy bank in every base - nice!), Cloudbase Academy (air complex in every base - definitely the most valuable secret project!), the Nethack Terminus (probe team bonus - yawn!), and the Manifold Harmonics (nice for extra food and energy but the game is almost over!).
Once you play with the new factions and buildings, it's doubtful you'd go back to playing just the original as much if at all.

Set in the time line of the Next Generation TV and film series, Invasion has you cast in the role of a fighter pilot destined for a big part in the upcoming war against the Earth-bound Borg. The Borg is not the only Trek race to show up in here; the Cardassians, Klingons, and Bajorans are all along, too. Speaking of the Trek gang, actors Michael Dorn as Worf and Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard contribute good voice acting to an all-around solid production.
The visuals in Invasion are uniformly sharp and show an attention to detail that almost makes the old PlayStation beg for mercy. The planets, the ships, the explosions (especially the explosions!) are topnotch. The music, however, is painfully repetitive. Disturbingly, the controls in Invasion are way too sensitive for all but the most die-hard space jockeys. The Valkyrie space fighters often make too wide a turn, resulting in constant misfires and untimely deaths.
Perhaps because it is set in the more politically correct universe of Star Trek, Invasion does lack the Colony Wars games' level of intense, gritty combat, and its story isn't nearly as engaging. Yet, for a laser blast-filled journey into the final frontier, it's still a fun ride. --Mark Brooks
Pros:
- Lovely graphics push the PlayStation to its limits
- Excellent voice acting all around
- Easy to get into
- Awkward controls
- Light story line doesn't compete with standout games in this genre
- Too few missions

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE
