Deluxe Pottery Wheel
Made by Natural Science Ind Ltd
Age Group: 8 - 12 years
Amazon base price: $19.99
List price: $24.99 (that's 20% off!)
Children can work with this wheel to make pottery, just like a real potter. Wobbly early attempts at vases and pots are endearing, but the fixed-wheel tool on top of this wheel makes it possible for children to churn out perfectly symmetrical creations. The battery-powered wheel is controlled with a floor pedal, allowing children an ideal introduction to the foot-eye-hand coordination of wheel-turned pottery. The air-dry clay (included) requires no kiln firing or even oven baking--just a shelf for drying. The set also comes with plastic jewel-like mosaic pieces, a paint and glaze kit, a paintbrush, sculpting tools, a sponge, cutting string, and an instruction booklet. --Gail Hudson

Edu Science Reflector Telescope 600-Power with Case

A great choice for the aspiring astronomer in the family, this Edu Science reflector telescope is very easy to use. The sturdy 600-power telescope comes with its own aluminum tripod and a plastic carry case, so you can protect the included lenses, eyepieces, and accessories when you take it on field trips. The telescope measures approximately 31 inches long by 15 inches high and comes with four interchangeable eyepieces (including 4 mm, 12.5 mm, and 20 mm), a finderscope with crosshairs for easy spotting, a Barlow lens, and an accessory tray. Edu Science 10x50 Binoculars
Made by Toys "R" Us
Age Group: 8 years and up
Amazon base price: $5.98
List price: $19.99 (that's 70% off!)
A good pair of binoculars makes for a uniquely interesting educational toy. Sure, there may be some bothersome spying on siblings, but aside from that, they afford opportunities to spot birds, boats, animals, mountains, and just about anything else far away. These binoculars feature 10x magnification, a neck strap, and a carrying pouch. They're durably constructed of die-cast metal with a protective rubber covering. So while it's never a good idea to drop them on rocks, it won't be the end of the fun if they happen to get bumped occasionally. We found them easy to work with and quick to focus. The packaging also carries a warning that, while somewhat obvious, bears heeding: "Do not stare directly into the sun." --John Moe

Galaga
Made by Majesco Sales, Inc.
Age Group: 5 years and up
Amazon base price: $2.48
List price: $19.99 (that's 88% off!)
Used price: $34.95
We never fancied that a company could mess up a game like
Galaga, but it's happened. While
Q-Bert and
Frogger 2 had to be considered successful remakes,
Galaga is anything but, and will leave players searching for the black-and-white
Galaga redux version that came out for Game Boy years ago.
On the positive side, this Galaga is in color--it adds four backgrounds in place of the once starry black night. The game also offers up bigger ships and enemies, but this ends up changing the game by allowing fewer foes onscreen at once. The result is an easy 24 levels, in which enemies fly in the same basic patterns. Once players get ahold of these flight formations, all challenge flies out the door--as does any interest that one might have had in playing the game.
Even hard-core retrogamers should stay away from this one. It's not the same as the original, and it won't test players' finger dexterity. Luckily, there are better versions of Galaga floating around for those who are willing to seek them out. --Robb Guido
Pros:
- Bears a slight resemblance to the original
Cons:

Yuck!!

Skip this and wait for the Playstation/PC version
