    SON LOVES IT
My son just received this as a gift for his 5th bday. He nearly jumped out of his shoes! It was easy to put together (clip & snap). It reminds me of a helocopter with wheels more than a sub. It's designed for mini figures and my son only has 2, but has many 12" figures in various attire. Makes a wonderful gift and allows kids to use their imaginations. Oh by the way, it may be called a submarine, but you can not submerge. The toy will only hold water.

Great for 18 months and up! But expensive...
The Thomas train and train collections are durable toys. Their real value, though, is that playing with the toys allows children to act out the great Thomas and Friends children's stories they read and watch.

This is a nice layout that provides far more track than the usual figure 8 layout that gets purchased first. It also provides a scenic mat, a tressle, and a building. But it is very expensive. There is generic track available that costs far less. Our kids haven't noticed the difference. IT IS EASY TO CREATE ELEVATED TRACK AND BRIDGES USING LEGO OR DUPLO PIECES AS SUPPORTS. GENERIC CRANES ARE AVAILABLE FOR MUCH LESS.

Kids' imaginations can remarkably supply buildings and water towers and cranes, etc., so that they won't even miss what might be lacking from less expensive sets. And families can build some of these items themselves out of old boxes, etc.

      Purchasing recommendation:
      * Choose which type of Thomas trains you will 'standardize' on. There are three kinds: This size of wooden trains from Learning Curve; larger, plastic, battery-operated trains from Tomy; and smaller, die-cast metal trains from Ertl. The wooden trains have the most products and accessories available.

      * The clickety-clack (grooved to look like real railroad) track in the Thomas series is great, but it's expensive; I recommend buying generic track. ... You can literally save hundreds of dollars by buying these kinds of sets.

      * Buy the Thomas and friends engines separately--and wait for sales. The kids care about the characters, so no short-cutting (ie., Brio or generic trains) here.

      * Look for trains bundled with VHS videos. You can get a video and a train (on sale) for about the same price as a train alone.

Can't Imagine Not Having the Battery Powered Engine
Word to the wise ... use a new battery. The engine has a hard time pulling the coal car on the hills without a strong battery.

My nephew loved playing with the train set. I purchased the figure 8 set, along with the bay bridge and some additional tracks ... and I still wanted more! He seemed to be thrilled with what he had.

He even used his Lego cars to drive on the ground over the railroad tracks. I can't wait until Christmas so I can buy him some additional sets to connect to this one.

          Bill survived so long
I've had Bill for about nine years and it has still survived with very little scratches. His magnet still works perfectly and it is great for little kids. It's fun to use Bill and Ben to pull a train. This train would not be complete without Bill's twin Ben.

          Thomas & Friends Chinese Dragon
          Made by Learning Curve
          Age Group: 24 months - 6 years
            Amazon base price: $13.99
Can this be called a mere train? In glorious yellow, red, and green with a silk ribbon tail, the exotic rolling Chinese Dragon is fit for royalty. With eight working wheels, this car can take the curves with the best of 'em. Its festive air makes the sturdy 4-inch wood car perfect for a parade or a carnival. Based on the popular Thomas the Tank Engine series by Reverend W. Awdry and the PBS television show Shining Time Station, the wooden railway system is compatible with other magnetic train sets. You can reenact all the exciting stories in the series or make up new ones. Thomas fans won't want to miss out on any of these fun, well-built railway characters. --Emilie Coulter

            Great For A Collection
This is a fun piece with it's bright colors. It's sturdy and the wheels are flexible. I got it for my niece and she plays with it constantly. Great for collection for both adults and kids who are fascinated by trains.

              Will's new favorite
We got this toy somewhere else on clearance and my son hasn't stopped playing with it yet. He's a dedicated Thomas fan and he's in heaven. It comes with Duncan, three circus animals, two circus train cars, track, and a double-sided board. One side has a track, tent, animals, etc. The other side is the same except no track. It also has a road if you want to run Bertie on it. Anyway, it was sure a bargain and he's really happy with it. If your child is into Thomas and likes the circus, this is sure to be a hit.

              Thomas & Friends Handcar

A great piece for your Thomas set
At first my 4 year old wasn't too excited about this one, mostly because it doesn't have a face, name or "personality". But it has become one of his favorites due to the up & down action of the handcar "arm". Not the first train car I'd buy, but a cool addition to any kid's Thomas collection.

Thomas & Friends Sir Topham Hatt & Lady Topham Hatt
                Made by Learning Curve
                Age Group: 36 months - 6 years
                  Amazon base price: $9.99
Sir Topham Hatt and his equally robust consort are perky and colorful. Sir Topham Hatt wears his trademark topper, gray flannels, and a black tailcoat with a rather smart yellow waistcoat; his wife sports a green skirt and a sensible sky blue blouse with lace collar. Their wooden heads sit on top of plastic bodies with movable arms. The legs also move (both together) so that either figure can be seated. Any rebellious type over the age of 4 is going to find the large Phillips screw in the back of each figure too hard to resist, so early dismemberment is a distinct possibility. But these figures are a lot more lifelike than the two-dimensional wooden cutouts that come with many Thomas sets. The box claims they are 3 inches high, but they actually measure just under 2.5 inches. --Richard Farr

Thomas & Friends Special Engine Shed
                  Made by Learning Curve
                  Age Group: 24 months - 6 years
                    Amazon base price: $19.99
When the trains of Sodor Island are weary from a hard day on the tracks, they head for the comfort of their sheds for a good night's sleep. The Special Engine Shed, part of the Thomas Wooden Railway System, attaches to a piece of track so that a sleepy engine can glide right in.

Winner of an Independent Toy Association of Canada Award, the Thomas Wooden Railway System is a wide array of sets that include special "clackity-clack" track, bridges, buildings, accessories, and all of Thomas's railway friends. Beautifully crafted out of fragrant hardwood, the pieces are smoothly finished and amazingly detailed, giving your children hours of creative, imaginative play as they re-create their favorite Thomas tales. Compatible with most other wooden railways. --Lisa Whipple

                    worth it
I have bought a lot thomas wooden railway things. Truely, you have to spend a lot but it is worth. My three little children, age 2(twins) and 4 are playing them everyday. They have fun and they learn to decide who passes crossroad first. They learn to build. They use sentences from the tape. My work is to help them build the railway system on the carpet. Dad sometimes has a railroad race with them. Oh, very exciting. My experience, you never have enough straight tracks(8 inchs). And the longer curverd track is very useful when you play on the carpet.Good stuff!
